Heritage Condemns the Abuse Against Another Journalist

Yerevan—The Heritage Party and parliamentary fraction deplore the act of violence committed on October 11 against journalist Ruzan Minasian of the Aravot daily. Minasian was viciously beaten by a group of thugs at her place work. It is extremely worrisome that vindictive and vengeful actions—which remain unexposed and unpunished—against the members of the press are becoming everyday events in Armenia.

In its statement released on September 17 with respect to the similarly shameful crime perpetrated on September 15 against Hovhannes Galajian, editor-in-chief of Iskakan Iravunk weekly, Heritage and its parliamentary group had called on the Republic’s law enforcers to “reveal the motives behind, and the executors of, this grave felony” so that such undemocratic occurrences would not gain strength in the country. It is a pity however that inaction by the bodies of law enforcement bred new crime, which apparently is a result of the impunity of the accountable and the authorities’ intolerance toward the journalist.

We are confident that all Armenian citizens, social and cultural associations, human rights organizations, and political parties—irrespective of ideological differences—will become more active, demanding, and determined toward putting an end to the continual infringement upon the freedom of expression and thought. We appeal to the law enforcers yet again to find the executors and architects of this illicit act at once and to punish them with the ultimate gravity of the law.
